Just a few days after the release of iOS 17, Apple released another iPhone update with iOS 17.0.1. The reason: Various security gaps have crept into the new function update.

Apple has released a new update for the iPhone with iOS 17.0.1 just a few days after the release of iOS 17. Also: new software for the Apple Watch, numerous Mac models and the iPad. In contrast to iOS 17, the new iPhone update does not provide any new functions. Because: iOS 17.0.1 is purely a security update.

iOS 17.0.1: Apple releases new security update

According to Apple, the new software fixes various WebKit and kernel errors. Also: a bug in certificate validation. Some gaps would have made it possible to play any code on the devices.

According to Apple, as in some previous cases, the Canadian security institute Citizen Lab from the University of Toronto has drawn attention to the security gaps. However, it is still unclear to what extent the vulnerabilities could be exploited.

New iPhone update closes security gaps

With iOS 17.0.2, Apple has also released a special security update for all new iPhone 15 models. The iOS 16.7 version closes security gaps in iOS 16 – on all iPhone models from iPhone 8 onwards.

In this case, Apple again received tips from the controversial spy company NSO Group, against which the iPhone company is even taking legal action. The company also announced that the attacks targeted iOS versions prior to 16.7.

Install iOS 17.0.1

iOS 17.0.1 has been available for free download since September 21, 2023. Apple traditionally recommends prompt installation. The new iPhone update is available for all models starting with the iPhone XS. The version can be changed via the device settings under “Generally” and “Software update“ can be downloaded.

With iPadOS 17.0.1, the US company has also released a new update for the iPad. The new iPad software is available for all Pro models but the second generation, all iPads Air from the third generation and all iPads and iPad Minis from the fifth generation. Also: New updates for the Apple Watch and numerous Mac models.
