Microsoft is keen to get Windows 11 users to use a Microsoft account. The company has even deleted the instructions on how to convert your Microsoft account into a local account from its help pages. We'll show you how to make the change anyway.

Similar to Google or Apple, Microsoft users will also be able to use one Microsoft account for all of the company's services in the future. This makes it possible, for example, to access the Microsoft Store or synchronize services such as OneDrive or Microsoft 365 on different devices.

However, the use of such an account is not yet mandatory. Users can also use a local account on their Windows PC.

But as the magazine Tom’s Hardware reported, Microsoft no longer wants to make it so easy for Windows 11 users to use a local account on their PC.

Windows 11: Microsoft account instead of local account

According to the report, with the latest Windows 11 installer, users can no longer easily bypass the ability to create an account or sign in with an existing account.

Although it is still possible to convert a Microsoft account into a local account, the company no longer wants to make it so easy for its users. The instructions for doing so are now nowhere to be found on the official support page.

Microsoft removes instructions from the help section

Microsoft offers instructions on how to switch from a local account to a Microsoft account in its Help section. Here you can find out how to change your Windows 11 login details to use your Microsoft account.

Until recently, the help page also included instructions on how to convert your Microsoft account into a local account. According to Tom’s Hardware This guide appeared on June 12th. However, by June 17th it had already disappeared, as a search in the Internet Archive shows.

However, it is still possible to use the operating system with a local account in Windows 11. You can also still convert your Microsoft account into a local account.

How to convert your Microsoft account to a local account

Even though Microsoft wants to make it difficult for its users to use Windows 11 with a local account, it is still possible. The process is also quite simple.

To do this, open the Settings app on your Windows PC. Here you will find the menu item “Accounts”. There, select the sub-item “Your data”. Here you can now select “Sign in with a local account instead”.

Microsoft pointed out on the now-disappeared page that users should create a password reset disk when using a local account. If the password is forgotten, it cannot be recovered.
