Do you want to know how websites use your data? Then you can use a new tool from the European Data Protection Authority. Because with this software you can see how certain sites handle your data.
Many users are probably reaching their limits when it comes to protecting their own data online. But the European Data Protection Authority (EDPS) now wants to remedy this.
Because with a new open source tool you can check how certain websites handle your data. The so-called Website Evidence Collector has so far only been tested on MacOS and Linux, but according to EDPS it should also work on Windows and all platforms that support NodeJS and Chromium.
This is how you can check your data on websites
If you want to install the Website Evidence Collector on your computer, you must first install Node.js and the Node.js package manager (NPM).
You can then download the file package from the EDPS website. In the README.md file you will find all the steps for the installation.

What does the EU expect from the new tool?
The European Data Protection Authority wants to use this new tool to ensure that EU data protection regulations are adhered to. “With the new EU data protection rules coming into force, many websites have updated their privacy consent management mechanisms and reconsidered their personal data processing practices,” the data protection authority said.
These changes have increased “public awareness of privacy issues on websites.” As a result, there were increasing complaints to supervisory authorities.
With the new tool, the European Data Protection Authority now wants to support consumers in “collecting evidence of the processing of personal data on websites”. This is also possible for laypeople with the new tool.
