Apple has revised its control center for iOS 18. In the future, it will contain several freely configurable views. Developers of third-party apps will be able to offer their own controls for the control center.

This will make certain functions available centrally. According to Apple, the new control center will also allow the two buttons that were previously reserved exclusively for the camera app and the flashlight to be customized.

iOS 18: The new features for your iPhone

With iOS18, you will soon be able to send messages via iMessage even in dead zones. However, the corresponding satellite connection will apparently only be available in the USA for the time being. According to the company, communication via satellite is protected by end-to-end encryption.

With the new iPhone update, iMessage will already include the emoji reactions and RCS messages announced at the end of 2023 as an SMS alternative. In addition, users will be able to link apps with Face ID in the future to restrict and protect access. Apple also wants to introduce the option of assigning access to applications to specific people in the address book.

There will be separate apps for password management for the iCloud keychain. Apple wants to add some new AI functions to its own Safari browser. For example, website content will be able to be summarized. The voice assistant Siri will also receive an update with iOS 18 and will be able to access ChatGPT in the future.

When is iOS 18 coming?

iOS 18 is expected to be released in September. Developers have been able to test a first preliminary version since June 11, 2024. The official and public beta version is expected to follow in July 2024. According to Apple, the update should run on all devices that support iOS 17. In concrete terms, this means on all devices built in 2018 – from the iPhone XS and XR onwards.

The iPad update iPadOS 18 will be released at the same time as iOS 18. Both versions will include the AI ​​system Apple Intelligence, among other things. According to Apple, this will be able to generate text and images and edit photos. The functions of Apple Intelligence will be made available with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 and gradually expanded.
