Smaller, lighter, less conspicuous – in the smartphone industry there are clear trends in the presentation of new cell phone models. Samsung is now putting an end to this trend with the Galaxy S23 Ultra – with an Ultra model with a high-resolution camera.

A lot helps a lot

Samsung’s recipe for success for top smartphones has proven itself for many years: a lot helps a lot and serves as proof of high quality. This principle applies primarily to the respective top device such as the recently introduced Galaxy S23 Ultra.

A powerful battery

A powerful battery is hidden behind the 6.8-inch screen. The selfie camera and the ultra-wide-angle camera have twelve megapixels. The two telecameras have been upgraded with ten megapixels each. A novelty is the main camera with a resolution of 200 megapixels. Samsung has never had such a high resolution.

Cameras with such high pixels are a rarity.

The only exceptions – and therefore also potential competitors for the Galaxy S23 Ultra – are the Xiaomi Mi12T Pro or the Edge 30 Ultra from Motorola. Models introduced in parallel, such as the Galaxy S23 and S23+, have been upgraded with cameras with 50 megapixels.

Advantages of the new camera technology

However, the advantages of the 200 megapixels are not clearly visible in a normal recording, since the camera software combines 16 camera pixels into one image pixel. This technique is called pixel binning and ensures that image files do not grow excessively. The pixel binning concept makes sense to save valuable storage space.

The technology also improves the image quality. Information from small camera pixels catches little light and combines the information into one large virtual pixel. As a result, a large pixel is created that includes more image information and thus more light.

Significantly higher prices

Samsung is well paid for this technological added value. For almost all smartphone models, the price increases significantly. The only exception is the gigabyte entry-level variant of the cost-intensive Ultra models, which is 50 euros cheaper than its predecessor. With this decision, the Korean provider follows the trend that more and more consumers are investing a lot of money in their new smartphones.

According to the company’s analysis, consumer interest in the premium smartphone segment is increasing.

More and more customers are opting for premium segment cell phones for over 600 euros or super premium smartphones for more than 1,000 euros. The providers are currently even assuming that this trend will intensify.

More emphasis on sustainability

With the new models, Samsung is also proving that it is increasingly attaching importance to sustainability. For example, the manufacturer is increasingly using recycled materials for its new smartphones. A good example are the speaker modules, some of which are made from the plastic used in old fishing nets.
There is a particularly high proportion of recycled material in the cover glass of the screen. The packaging, which consists entirely of cardboard and paper, is just as environmentally friendly. The only exception is the metal frame, which Samsung still covers with a plastic film.

High clocked processor

Another technological feature of the Galaxy S23 series is the “Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy” processor, which is clocked relatively high due to its eight cores.

In addition, a new optical image stabilization system is used that enables high-quality videos even in moderate lighting conditions.

New notebook variants

In addition to the new smartphones, Samsung also presented new notebook variants. One of the top models is the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra, which is the only laptop that includes a dedicated graphics card for graphics-intensive games and applications.

We’re talking about the Geforce RTX 4000 Mobile. The variant with the best equipment at a price of 3,699 euros includes an i9 processor from Intel, 1 TB of memory and 32 GB of RAM. The smallest version of the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra has been upgraded with an i7 processor, 512 GB SSD and 16 GB RAM. This model costs 2,799 euros. As the entry-level model among the Samsung Galaxy Books, the Book3 is being launched with an i3 CPU, 256 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM for 760 euros. In the best-equipped variant, this model costs a total of 1,169 euros.

Good news for business people

Additionally, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Book 3 360. As a classic convertible, the device combines the advantages of a notebook and tablet. The Galaxy Book 3 360 has a 360-degree foldable screen and is particularly well suited for creative users using the S Pen. The repertoire is supplemented by the Galaxy Book 3 Pro for business purposes. This device is available in 14 or 16 inch sizes as well as an i5 and i7 processor. The variety of memory sizes ranges from 256 GB to one Tbyte. The price range for this notebook is between 1,699 euros and 2,199 euros.

The variety of products rounds off the Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360 as the most expensive model in the new product range. At a price of 1,799 euros, buyers benefit from the advantages of a 2-in-1 convertible, which is equipped as a 16-inch version with an i5 processor, 256 GB of memory and 8 GB of RAM. At 2,499 euros, the 5G model is the most expensive variant.
