Apple has on its “Incredibly fast”A new MacBook Pro and a new iMac with M3 chip were presented at the event. We have all the information at a glance.

Apple MacBook Pro with M3 chip

Apple’s Halloween event kicked off with new MacBook Pros. These are appearing again in a 14-inch and a 16-inch version, but this year with a basic M3 chip. Apple is using its 13-inch MacBook Pro with M2 chip for this purpose. The design remains unchanged. But there is now the Space Black color for the devices with M3 Pro and M3 Max.

The new laptops are intended to attract customers with Intel devices to the new M3 platform, which, like the Apple A17 Pro, is now manufactured using the three nanometer process. Apple generally describes the performance of the base chip with 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU as 35 percent faster than the M1 chip in the CPU and 65 percent faster in the GPU. The M3 chip supports up to 24 gigabytes of RAM memory and another external screen. All M3 chips have a better Neural Engine as well as the AV1 decoder for video compression.

The M3 MacBook Pro is available in an expandable 512 and 1 terabyte version starting at 1,999 euros. The base device is available in space gray and silver. It will be delivered from November 7, 2023.

Apple MacBook Pro with M3 Pro and M3 Max

The big leaps are in the M3 Pro and M3 Max chip, which are said to have significantly better graphics performance. Depending on the configuration, the M3 Pro has 14 or 18 GPU cores. The M3 Max even has 40 in the top configuration. This is supposed to ensure 80 percent faster GPU performance compared to the M1 Max, although Apple deliberately omits comparisons to its predecessor (M2 Max).

The new M3 chips now support ray tracing, which could be particularly interesting for the gaming sector if more developers now jump on Apple’s new “gaming focus”.

There is a small jump in CPU performance compared to its predecessors. Depending on the variant, the M3 Pro or Max now has 11/12 or 14/16 CPU cores. Apple promises up to 30 percent faster performance for the models compared to the M1 Pro or 50 percent faster for the Max. This supports up to 128 gigabytes of RAM. The M3 Pro can work with a maximum of 36 gigabytes.

The new M3 chips also have a “Dynamic Caching” feature that distributes RAM to tasks in real time to provide exactly the right performance for each app. The battery life should be a maximum of 22 hours, as Apple offers the M3 the same energy efficiency as the M1, only with more power.

The new MacBook Pro with M3 Pro and Max starts at 2,499 euros in 14 inches and 2,999 euros in 16 inches and can be pre-ordered now. In addition to silver, the device is now also available in black. Delivery will begin on November 7, 2023. According to the manufacturer, customers with an M3 Max chip will have to wait “2-3 weeks”.

Apple iMac with M3

Apple’s iMac has also received an upgrade. But anyone who was hoping for more than just a new chip will be disappointed. The iMac is still only available in 24-inch, but now with a basic M3 processor (8 CPU and 10 GPU cores).

This supports up to 24 gigabytes of RAM as well as the new Wi-Fi 6E standard. The iMac still has the same 4.5k screen. However, the 1080p camera is made from 100 percent recycled aluminum. The accessories are identical in color, but are still charged via Lightning and not via USB-C.
