Contactless payment is now possible almost everywhere using a smartphone or smartwatch. Many iOS users use Apple Pay for this. Sometimes, however, you do need “real” banknotes. But lCan I also withdraw money with Apple Pay?

Contactless payment is now possible almost everywhere, not just with a debit card or credit card. Most smartphones and smartwatches also support this option.

Although this payment method has already arrived in most shops and cafés, many people still rely on cash. But can you withdraw money from an ATM without a physical bank card?

Withdraw money with Apple Pay – how it works

Many banks offer cash withdrawals via app. It has also been possible for some time to withdraw money from ATMs with NFC technology using a digital wallet.

For example, a few years ago, Sparkasse gradually introduced the option of withdrawing money contactless using Apple Pay. However, users must have their Sparkasse card stored in the Wallet app.

The process is then similar to contactless payment. To get money, users must first unlock their smartphone. They then hold the mobile device to the corresponding contactless symbol on the machine. There they must select the “cash withdrawal” option and enter their PIN.

It is important that this is not the unlock code for the cell phone or smartwatch, but the personal identification number of the bank card. As with using the physical card, only three failed attempts are permitted. Otherwise, the card will be automatically blocked – even in the wallet.

Contactless cash withdrawals do not work everywhere

Although contactless cash withdrawals are practical, they do have one disadvantage. Not all ATMs in Germany are NFC-enabled. Even abroad, only a few providers offer this service. So anyone who will be dependent on cash in the foreseeable future should continue to carry their physical bank card with them.

It is also unclear how long the option of contactless withdrawals will continue to exist. Some banks have already decided against the method. The Volks- und Raiffeisenbank, for example, has discontinued the service. The reason: cash withdrawals via smartphone are hardly used.
