You have bought a balcony power plant, but are unsure about which angle you should set? We will explain to you which angle you can use to achieve the best yield from your mini PV system.

The number of balcony power plants continues to rise in Germany. In the first quarter of 2024, around 407,000 balcony power plants were in operation in this country. In 2023, there were just under 350,000 balcony power plants.

This could well be due to the fact that the maximum feed-in has been increased from 600 watts to 800 watts by 2024. This has made the mini PV system even more attractive for consumers.

If you have also purchased such a system, there are a few things to consider. For example, the angle of inclination, which can significantly affect the yield of your balcony power plant.

The best tilt angle for your balcony power plant

When you install and set up your mini PV system, you should consider a few things. For example, the direction in which your balcony power plant is facing.

The best option for this is of course a south-facing orientation, as this allows the most sunlight and thus the most energy to be captured.

According to the manufacturer EQOH, an east or west orientation is also possible. With an east orientation, more electricity would simply be produced in the morning hours, while with a west orientation, more electricity would be produced in the evening hours.

Even with supposedly poorer orientations, solar production is still so high that a balcony power plant is worthwhile in almost all situations.

According to the manufacturer EQOH, an inclination angle of 30 degrees is optimal for a balcony power plant facing fully south. This offers “the absolute highest yield”.

How to set the optimal angle when alignment deviates

If you cannot align your balcony power plant completely to the south, according to the manufacturer Yuma, it is advisable to adjust the angle of inclination as well. If your system deviates more than 50 degrees from the south axis in an easterly or westerly direction, you should align your solar modules at a flatter angle.

The flatter the module is, the more sunlight it can capture.

However, Yuma points out that such a setting creates “a better surface for dirt to attack.” Dirty solar panels could reduce the yield of your system.

Adjust the angle of inclination of the balcony power plant seasonally

In addition to these recommendations, Yuma says it would be ideal if you could adjust the angle of your balcony power plant seasonally. To do this, you need a flexibly adjustable mount for your solar panels.

If you have such a mount, you can adjust the angle of inclination depending on the season, as the position of the sun also changes over the course of the year.

Yuma recommends a tilt angle of 55 to 60 degrees for south-facing installations in winter. In summer, a tilt angle of 45 to 40 degrees is recommended. To ensure that the sun's rays hit your solar panels as vertically as possible in the transitional months, a tilt angle of 40 to 55 degrees is optimal in the transitional months.
