The Chinese company Mingyang has one of the most powerful Offshore wind turbines in the world are built. What is special about them: a V-shaped structure connects two turbines to form a double wind turbine.

The expansion of renewable energies is progressing worldwide. In China, a company recently completed the most powerful offshore wind farm. The innovative V-shaped wind farm comes from Mingyang Smart Energy.

It is located on a floating platform in Guangzhou and has two MySE8.3-180 rotors. These turbines have a total output of around 16.6 megawatts (MW). A V-shaped structure holds them together. The plant is currently the most powerful offshore wind power plant in the country.

Double wind turbine: The most powerful offshore wind power plant in China

The so-called OceanX is expected to produce around 54 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year. This would be enough to supply around 30,000 average Chinese households with energy. Compared to the traditional Chinese electricity mix, which is heavily dependent on coal, the plant could save around 59,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.

The V-shaped structure and the floating platform of the OceanX enable it to be used in deep waters, among other things. The base is made of concrete and distributes the load across the entire platform via tension cables.

This ensures a stable structure even in harsh weather conditions. The so-called mooring system, which anchors the platform to the seabed, is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions such as typhoons with wind speeds of up to 72.24 m/s.

Sector could become climate neutral in the long term

OceanX represents a significant advance in offshore wind energy and demonstrates how new technologies can help increase energy production and reduce emissions.

In the long term, the use of such systems could result in an even more sustainable energy mix worldwide and thus effectively contribute to the decarbonization of the sector.
