ETH Zurich is one of the leading universities when it comes to spinoffs, i.e. corporate outlot from the university. After a break-in during the Corona years, there were a total of 53 ETH spinoffs in the record year 2023. Nine of Pioneer Fellows were-the university's startup scholarship holders. 2024 was the second strongest year since 1973. ETH students founded a total of 46 startups from the university last year

When can a startup be called a spinoff of the ETH Zurich? The term spinoff is stretchy. Does it already count when an alumni of the university is founded? According to the ETH, not. This defines a spinoff on your website as follows: “A spinoff from ETH is a company that uses a technology developed at ETH or knowledge commercially. This can be a software, for example, patented technology or therapy, or simply knowledge that you as a founder only acquired at ETH – either through your work, your research or studies. ”

In further steps, the founders have to apply for the Spinoff label. Accreditation takes place by the Vice Presidium for knowledge transfer and economic relationships, but not all startups are obtained. A total of 615 spinoffs from ETH have been created since 1973. For comparison: The Fraunhofer Institute has published a statistics on spinoffs in Germany, at which the TU Munich with a total of 810 spinoffs is at the top between 2014 and 2022.

To support outputs, ETH offers the Pioneer Fellowship. This scholarship in the amount of 160 thousand euros (150 thousand Swiss francs) is awarded every two years to researchers who want to commercialize their ideas.
