How Apple’s new app works

Apple has brought some new features to the iPhone with iOS 18. However, the update also has a new application on board: the Passwords app. We'll tell you how it works and what distinguishes it from the iCould keychain.

With iOS 18, Apple has brought a new application to the iPhone: the Passwords app. With it, you can manage, edit and share your login data in one central location. This applies to passwords, passkeys, codes for two-factor authentication as well as your existing iCloud login data.

Difference between Passwords app and iCloud Keychain

Many iPhone users have long wanted a standalone app to manage their login data. Until now, it was only possible to manage passwords via the iCloud keychain and thus via the somewhat cumbersome route via the system settings.

A big advantage of the password app: The application not only synchronizes automatically with all your Apple devices, but also allows synchronization with Windows. The only requirement for this is that you have to download iCloud for Windows from the Microsoft Store.

According to Apple, all passwords are synchronized using end-to-end encryption. The app also allows you to find your saved login details in one central location – without having to go through the system settings. Another advantage: The passwords app saves your passwords in different categories. These include: “All”, “Passkeys”, “Codes”, “WLAN”, “Security” and “Deleted”. There is also a search function to find login details more quickly.

Share and automatically save passwords

In the “Security” category, the Passwords app warns you about passwords that have been used multiple times or are part of a data leak. Apple also alerts you to passwords that are too simple and easy to guess.

Another function of the app is the automatic saving of new passwords. In concrete terms, this means that if you generate passwords automatically using the AutoFill function, they are also automatically saved in the passwords app.

They will then be available on all your devices. You can also create groups to share logins, WiFi passwords and passkeys with other users.
