At the Auto Shanghai trade fair, Toyota presented a new electric car battery that is said to have a range of up to 1,000 kilometers. It is part of a series of new technologies that the Japanese carmaker wants to put on the road in the future.
Toyota used the Auto Shanghai show to introduce a number of technological innovations. The Japanese automaker has apparently focused primarily on improving the range, performance and cost of its electric vehicles.
Improved electric car battery: Toyota is working on new technologies
Above all, Toyota is concentrating on developing an improved electric car battery. The company has launched a number of initiatives to improve performance and reduce costs. We are ready to move from research to solid-state battery production.
The new battery technology promises higher energy density and shorter charging times than the lithium-ion batteries currently in use. According to the carmaker, a technological breakthrough has been achieved. However, he did not explain the details. Vehicles with the new solid-state battery should be on the market by 2028 at the latest.
Toyota plans electric car battery with a range of 1,000 kilometers
Toyota also announced plans to make a more energy-intensive e-battery available in 2026, with a range of 1,000 kilometers per charge. The loading time should be a maximum of 20 minutes. In addition, the company wants to reduce the costs by 20 percent compared to the current electric model bZ4X.
A number of cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are also planned for use by 2027 at the latest. Toyota is aiming for a 20 percent increase in range and a 40 percent reduction in cost compared to the bZ4X.
Electric car battery: Toyota inspired by Tesla and rocket technology
In addition to innovations for its EV batteries, Toyota also announced that it will use Tesla’s giga-casting process to reduce the complexity and cost of manufacturing the next generation of electric vehicles.
In addition, the company worked with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries missile designers to improve the aerodynamics of its vehicles, thereby increasing their range.
In addition, the Japanese carmaker wants to introduce smaller so-called eAxles in the future, which combine electric motors and the components for the electric car drive from external suppliers. This innovation is also intended to increase the range of electric cars. But the loading space in the rear part of the vehicle should also be enlarged in this way. The drive unit of the carriages is located there.
Criticism for slow development
Toyota also announced that it is developing silicon carbide wafers for semiconductors to be used in the next generation of inverters for electric cars. The chips would promise to reduce the power loss of the electric motor by up to 50 percent.
In the past, the Japanese automaker has been criticized by some of its investors for being too slow in rolling out battery-electric models. That’s probably why the company published its new technology briefing a day before the annual shareholders’ meeting. By 2026, the carmaker expects annual sales of 1.5 million electric vehicles.
