The Chinese start-up Tailan New Energy is currently working on a solid-state battery that is suitable for electric vehicles, electronics or energy storage systems. Electric cars could theoretically achieve a range of 2,000 kilometers.
In order to achieve the goals set in the mobility sector, significantly more electric vehicles are needed on the roads. But many people still have reservations about the technology. One example is the range of electric cars. However, this has now increased dramatically in some cases.
The Chinese start-up Tailan New Energy claims to have made significant progress in battery technology. Accordingly, the company developed a solid-state battery based on lithium with an energy capacity of 720 watt hours per kilogram. The battery could fundamentally change the way we store and use energy.
Solid-state battery: Is an electric car with a range of 2,000 kilometers possible?
The research team at Tailan New Energy is making many small optimizations in previous research. This includes two key components, among others. First, an ultra-thin, dense composite oxide solid-state electrolyte that enables faster ion transport while offering greater safety compared to volatile organic components of conventional lithium-ion batteries.
The team also developed high-capacity anode and cathode materials. These materials help to significantly increase energy capacity and improve battery longevity. At the same time, the company emphasizes the diverse application possibilities. It can be used in electric vehicles, mobile devices and electronics or huge energy storage systems.
For comparison: The Chinese electric car manufacturer Nio assumes that its cars will be able to achieve a range of 1,000 kilometers with semi-solid-state batteries from 2024. The energy density of these batteries is 360 watt hours per kilogram. With an energy capacity of 720 watt hours per kilogram, the Talent New Energy battery would theoretically have a range of 2,000 kilometers.
Further optimization required before commercialization of the technology
Tailan New Energy plans to further develop and commercialize the technology in the coming months. The focus is on reducing production costs and scaling the manufacturing processes. These steps are crucial to making batteries accessible to a wider market and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
The company's development thus sets new standards in battery technology and offers opportunities for the future of energy supply. With the increasing need to find sustainable and efficient energy solutions, these high-performance batteries could play a key role in the global energy transition.
