YouTube is taking action against ad blockers worldwide
YouTube confirmed in June 2023 that the platform wanted to deactivate videos for users with ad blockers. At the time, Lawton described the measure as just a “small global experiment.” Now the company has expanded its efforts.
For a few weeks now, there have been increasing reports of users who can no longer play YouTube videos because they are using an ad blocker. According to YouTube, the “use of ad blockers” again violates the platform’s terms of use. Communications Manager Christopher Lawton added that:
Ads support a diverse ecosystem of creators worldwide and give billions of people access to the content they love on YouTube.
Advertising on YouTube
YouTube has already made some changes to its ads this year. In May, the platform introduced approximately 30-second commercials on its TV app that cannot be skipped.
The company apparently hopes that longer advertisements will encourage users to subscribe to the ad-free subscription YouTube Premium. The platform has also recently started offering a cheaper Lite version of the subscription. It contains fewer ads but does not include all the features of YouTube Premium.
