OpenAI has taken the world by storm with ChatGPT. Now the company wants to establish another AI model. It should be better than all previous systems. But what exactly is OpenAI o1?
With ChatGPT, OpenAI has revolutionized the field of artificial intelligence. The company has now presented a new AI model: OpenAI o1. This is a series of programs that are primarily designed to solve complex problems, according to the developers in an official blog post.
Although the model needs more time to react, it should be able to think through complex tasks in the areas of science, programming and mathematics – in the truest sense of the word.
What is OpenAI o1?
OpenAI o1 is an advanced AI system that builds on the GPT models. However, the system's capabilities are intended to go far beyond that. While earlier versions of ChatGPT primarily specialize in text input and its processing, OpenAI 01 combines various skills and functions to handle more complex interactions and tasks.
OpenAI has trained the model so that its approach to problems is more similar to that of humans. Through training, it learns to refine a thought process, try out different strategies and recognize its own mistakes. These skills are based on the so-called chain of thought process. Tests have already shown that the concept seems to be working.
The AI model had to solve demanding benchmark tasks from the fields of physics, chemistry and biology. According to the company, the performance was equivalent to that of doctoral students: “In a qualifying test for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), GPT-4o solved only 13 percent of the tasks correctly, while the thinking model achieved 83 percent.”
In addition, the o1 series is multimodal – like GPT-4o. The system should be able to understand, process and react accordingly to not only text, but also images, audio files and videos. This also expands the possible applications at the user level.
New o1 series still in development
According to OpenAI, the advanced reasoning capabilities of the o1 series should be particularly useful for researchers, physicists and developers.
However, it is still an early model and does not yet have many of the features that make ChatGPT so successful. For example, the o1 series cannot search the Internet. It is also not yet possible to upload images and files.
However, the development of OpenAI o1 represents a significant step forward in solving complex thinking tasks and thus a new level of, says the company. “For this reason, we are resetting the counter to one and calling this series OpenAI o1.”
OpenAI plans regular updates and improvements. The next update is said to already be in development. Currently, only ChatGPT Plus and Team users have access to the OpenAI o1 preview. However, access to the “mini” version will soon be available to all users. A fixed date has not yet been set.
