Researchers at the University of Bath are working to improve virtual reality exergames, a combination of sports games, by using sensors to measure the emotional reactions of users. This will allow the sensors to adapt the game in real time to the emotional state and physical exertion of the players.

The game is designed to maintain motivation and make training more effective. This concept could change the field of physical education, rehabilitation and sports science. Current exergames have the problem that many users stop as soon as the training becomes too strenuous or boring. The researchers hope to be able to make training more emotionally pleasant and more motivating in the long term.

Exergames: VR sensors detect emotional states

The team from the University of Bath developed special sensors that record physical changes during exercise, such as heart rate, sweat production and skin reactions. Manufacturers can integrate these sensors into VR headsets or wearable devices such as smartwatches.

The system is designed to be able to recognize when users are suffering from stress or boredom. Based on the data collected, it then adapts the training accordingly. In a study with 72 participants, the test subjects took part in a static VR bicycle race. The researchers were able to reliably recognize emotional states such as happiness, stress or calm based on physiological data and adapt the game accordingly.

Gaming experience becomes even more motivating through new measurement methods

This enables a personalized and emotionally engaging gaming experience. Until now, it has been difficult to accurately measure emotional states during physical activity. Background noise or unpredictable movements often affect the reliability of sensors. However, the new technology has enabled the researchers to minimize these interference factors and take more precise measurements.

The research team has formulated eight guidelines for the developers of exergames. These are intended to help improve the emotional engagement of users. In the long term, the researchers expect an increasing spread of VR-based training in schools, rehabilitation and sports.
