The Japanese daily newspaper Nikkei has calculated how much the iPhone 15 Pro Max costs to produce. Is Apple’s selling price justified?
In September 2023, Apple presented the latest generation of its iPhone models. In addition to the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus, the US company is relying on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max this year. But, as is usual with Apple products, a purchase can quickly cost money.
Because Apple is charging 1,199 euros for the basic model of the iPhone 15 Pro. For the iPhone 15 Pro Max it is at least 1,449 euros. But how does such a high price actually come about? The Japanese daily newspaper also asked this question Nikkei asked.
iPhone 15 Pro Max costs $558 to produce
In cooperation with the research institute Fomalhaut Techno Solutions, the newspaper therefore examined the manufacturing price of all components of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This costs $1,119 in the United States. As with previous models, Apple seems to have planned a large cushion.
Because all components cost a lot Nikkei a total of $558. That’s $641 less than the retail price. The most expensive is the A17 Pro processor, which costs around $130 per device. After that comes the titanium screen ($130) and frame ($50). The components increased in price to varying degrees compared to the previous generation (iPhone 14 Pro Max).
Prices for components increase at different rates
The chipset therefore costs 27 percent more to produce. The screen is ten percent more expensive. By using titanium instead of aluminum, the price of the frame increased by 43 percent. Still, Apple can’t put the full $641 into its own pockets.
Finally, additional costs arise for marketing, logistics and assembly. The actual profit margin is therefore unclear. Nevertheless, experts expect that the iPhone 16 will be a little more expensive again. Given the current market situation, a price jump next year seems quite likely.
