The new Apple products at a glance

Apple introduced several new products at its Glowtime event – including the iPhone 16 series, two new Apple Watches and new AirPods. An overview.

Artificial Intelligence in the iPhone 16

The iPhone 16 models are all about “artificial intelligence” – or as Apple says: Apple Intelligence. The system, which will be included in iOS 18.1 in October 2024, can generate text, create images and summarize notifications, according to Apple. However, it will not appear in the EU until 2025 at the earliest. The same applies to a German-language version, which Apple has not even announced yet.

To ensure that the basic iPhones can also support the system, all devices are delivered with eight gigabytes of RAM. In addition, both iPhone 16 models will get the new A18 processor, which promises significant improvements in the “neural engine”, i.e. the “brain” of AI.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are very similar to their predecessors. A new feature is the “action button”, which was already introduced in the iPhone 15 Pro/Max last year. This allows apps to be opened more quickly or shortcuts to be executed. The size of the devices has not changed. The two cameras are now placed vertically one below the other again in order to be able to record “spatial videos” for the Vision Pro glasses.

The iPhone 16 models are advertised as real “cameras”. Apple has built a shutter button into the side of all devices that should also respond to touch inputs. Like a DSLR camera, you can use it to focus, take photos and zoom.

With a double tap, you can also set filters or determine the depth of the shot. Apple also allows third-party developers to integrate the function into their apps – Snapchat was mentioned as an example. The battery has also been improved. However, Apple has not yet given any exact figures.

The iPhone 16 will initially be available in blue, pink, green, white and black. With 128 gigabytes, it will cost 949 euros. The iPhone 16 Plus with the same storage variant costs 1,099 euros.

Apple iPhone 16 Pro/Max: Larger screens and larger batteries

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max have received significantly more innovations. Both devices now have larger screens.

While the predecessors still use 6.1 and 6.7 inch screens, the 16 Pro now has 6.3 inches and the Pro Max even 6.9 inches. This means that the display edges are expected to shrink by another 33 percent.

The A18 Pro processor is also said to be significantly faster than the A18 in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus – especially when it comes to AI calculations. Apple has also replaced the ultra-wide-angle camera. The new lens has a resolution of 48 megapixels and can therefore capture significantly more details in photos.

The iPhone 16 Pro also has a five-fold zoom, which was only available on the iPhone 15 Pro Max last year. Both Pro iPhones support 4K videos at 120 frames per second for the first time. According to the manufacturer, the devices should also have significantly better battery life. However, Apple has not yet revealed any specific figures here either.

Anyone who wants an iPhone 16 Pro can buy a gold color for the first time and pays 1,199 euros for 128 gigabytes of storage. For the larger Pro Max model, which starts with 256 gigabytes, you pay 1,449 euros.

Apple Watch: Series 10, new color for the Ultra

Apple also introduced the tenth generation of the Apple Watch, which surprisingly has almost no AI. The design was slightly modified for the “anniversary edition”. Apple also increased the size of the watch to 42 mm and 46 mm.

At 9.7 millimeters, it is Apple's thinnest smartwatch to date. The OLED screen is said to be a whopping 40 percent brighter than the previous model. This year, Apple is replacing the steel version with titanium, which should make the device 20 percent lighter.

The Series 10 is also said to charge faster. 80 percent of the battery should be restored in 30 minutes of charging. The watch has a new, significantly faster S10 processor, which should enable faster software and more actions directly on the device. For the first time, the Series 10 speakers can also be used for media playback.

A new function will also be available on the Watch 9 and Ultra 2: the detection of sleep apnea. Many people do not recognize the disease themselves, which causes them to fall asleep at various times of the day. Apple is still awaiting certification from the US authority “FDA” in order to be able to describe the function as “medical”.

The Apple Watch Series 10 is available in silver, rose and black. The 45 mm version starts at a price of 449 euros. If you want the larger 49 mm version, you will pay at least 470 euros. All smartwatches will be delivered from September 20, 2024. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 will remain the same price.

Apple AirPods: Generation 4 (with ANC) and colorful AirPods Max

Apple is launching two new AirPods. Both models support USB-C for charging – the AirPods 4 with ANC also support wireless charging. The AirPods Max now also charge with USB-C, meaning that all Apple headphones use the new charging standard.

The AirPods 4 are the new entry-level model, which is based on the design of the AirPods Pro, but does not have active noise cancellation. There are also fourth-generation AirPods with ANC, which, in comparison to the “normal” AirPods 4, come with active noise cancellation.

The AirPods 4 with ANC also have a charging case with a speaker. This should make the headphones easier to find, as they can play a beep via “Find My?”. According to Apple, both models should have better sound and a longer battery life. According to Apple, the AirPods Pro 2 can be used as a hearing aid with a future update.

There are no new features in the AirPods Max headphones other than new colors and USB-C. The AirPods 4 cost 149 euros, if you want ANC you have to pay 199 euros. The AirPods Max still cost a whopping 579 euros.
