
The large AI hype came with the launch of Chatgpt at the end of 2022-suddenly generative AI was usable for everyone.
Christian Röpke has long since dealt intensively on the topic: As early as 2019, he built the first ML applications at the Mobility Startup Tier as Head of AI, including fraud detection and the optimization of scooter desployments, and later coordinated the AI and data activities in the company.

“As a Head of AI, you are more of a tech lead, hands-on, close to the product in early stage startups. The scaling is much more about coordination,” says Röpke.
Today, as an applied AI consultant, he supports young startups to bring Machine Learning (ML) and Large-Language models (LLMS) into their products-or to build entire business models on them.
We talked to him about how this can be done – and when to do it better.
What does AI-First actually mean?
For many German startups, it is clear: If you want to remain relevant in the future, you cannot avoid AI. According to a survey by the digital association Bitkom, 39 percent of tech startups believe that companies without a clear AI strategy cannot exist technologically or in recruiting or fundraising.
