The so-called timeline of Google Maps is a personal map based on your location history. With it, you can see which places you have already visited and which routes you have taken. We'll tell you how you can activate location history.

Google Maps: Activate or deactivate location history – here's how

To create a timeline, you need to activate location services and location history on Google Maps. You can then track the places you have visited and the routes you have taken on a personal map. If you activate location history, your location will be regularly saved on your devices and Google servers – even if you are not using any Google apps in the meantime.

Google Maps creates a timeline for you based on this data. To activate location history on Android, you must do the following:

  1. Open the Google Maps app on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Then tap your profile picture and then tap “My timeline„.
  3. Now click on the three-dot menu and on “Settings and privacy„.
  4. Under “Location settings“ you can now either “Location tracking is activated” or “Location history is disabled“ click on .

If you want to enable Google Maps Location History on your iPhone or iPad, first go to the timeline. Then click on “Settings“ and then on “Enable location history” or “Disable location history„.

After you have activated your location history in Google Maps, you can track the places you have visited and the routes you have taken. To do this, click on your profile picture in the app and then on “My Timeline”. Or go to the timeline directly.

According to Google, errors can occasionally occur in the timeline. If you are in a densely built-up urban area, for example, a different restaurant may be displayed than the one you actually visited. To improve the accuracy of the timeline, you can also manually confirm and enter places you have visited.
