Researchers have developed an electric car battery that can be charged to 80 percent in 15 minutes. It should have a particularly long service life.
Many people shy away from electric mobility because of the charging time. But what if an electric car could be charged from zero to 80 percent in just 15 minutes? This may sound futuristic at first, but it could soon become reality. Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Canada have developed a new type of lithium-ion battery.
This should not only be able to be charged relatively quickly, but also have a long service life. The design could take electromobility to a new level and make it easier to switch from combustion engines to electric cars.
E-car battery reaches 80 percent in 15 minutes
The promising technology is based on an improved anode, usually made of graphite. However, the researchers developed a method in which the system fuses the graphite particles. This increases the conductivity significantly. The result is that the lithium ions can flow faster. The result: significantly reduced loading times.
The innovation has the advantage that the battery has no loss of performance despite fast charging. It is also long-lasting. According to the researchers, up to 800 charging cycles should be possible. The battery could be particularly interesting for people who do not have a permanent parking space or their own charging station.
Residents of apartment buildings often do not have access to a fast charging station. However, the fast-charging battery could make electric cars more attractive to a broader target group.
Technology attractive due to low manufacturing costs
At the same time, they reduce manufacturing costs thanks to the optimized design, which in turn could lead to cheaper vehicles. This also improves resale value as sellers in the used car market are less likely to have to replace long-lasting batteries. This is also a big advantage for the environment, as companies have to produce and dispose of fewer batteries.
To make this technology suitable for mass use, researchers are working on making battery production scalable. The aim is to combine the new design with existing production lines. The first results were published in the renowned specialist journal Advanced Science published. If this technology becomes established, it could change the market for electric cars in the future and make an important contribution to the energy transition.
