In order for artificial intelligence to be able to generate content such as texts, images and music, it must learn. However, thousands of actors and musicians are now protesting against their works being used for AI training without consent – including numerous celebrities.
Thousands of actors, musicians and authors have signed a letter of protest against so-called AI training. These include celebrities such as actresses Julianne Moore and Rosario Dawson, musician Robert Smith from The Cure, actor Kevin Bacon, Nobel Prize winner for literature Kazuo Ishiguro and Thom Yorke, singer of the band Radiohead.

By Wednesday, October 23, 2024, around 13,500 cultural workers had already signed the statement. They protest against the fact that their works are used without consent to train applications with artificial intelligence. It says:
The unlicensed use of creative works for generative AI training is a major, unjust threat to the livelihoods of the people behind these works and must not be allowed.
Lawsuit against AI companies
Like the daily newspaper The Guardian reports, the initiative was initiated by the British composer Ed Newton-Rex. In the meantime, he was employed as a manager in an AI company. Newton-Rex criticizes, among other things, the term “training data”. Because this would “dehumanize” works created by humans.
In addition to individuals, numerous organizations also took part in the protest and signed the statement. These include the three major labels in the music industry: Sony, Universal and Warner. They had already filed a lawsuit against two start-ups that offer music generators with AI.
