What is the Fediverse?

This option to set up your own server is also known as an instance. Each of these instances is based on a community of users and offers services such as microblogging, social networks, forums and the like. The term Fediverse is a portmanteau of the English words “Federation” and “Universe”.

How does Fediverse work?

The Fediverse is based on open protocols such as the decentralized protocol ActivityPub, which is considered the standard for the network. It allows the servers to communicate with each other. When users post a message on one such instance, other users can see, share and comment on it on other instances.

This is intended to enable seamless communication between different platforms across Fediverse. An advantage of the decentralized network is its openness and diversity. For example, users can choose which instance they want to log in to. The community therefore consists of people with different viewpoints and ideas.

Privacy and security

The topic of data protection and security plays an important role in Fediverse. Because user data resides on different servers, it is more difficult for third parties to monitor or control the entire network. This means that users enjoy more anonymity and control over their data than is the case with classic social networks.

Although the Fediverse offers many advantages, there are also some hurdles. For example, the user experience varies depending on the instance. The interaction of different platforms can sometimes be extremely complex. The network also faces the question of how the infrastructure will be financed and grown.

Nevertheless, it represents an interesting alternative to classic social networks. Fediverse has the potential to take power away from the big tech platforms and put it in the hands of the users. This can create a platform for free expression and social interaction.

How do you get into Fediverse?

There is more than one way to get into Fediverse. Access is granted automatically when you create an account with one of the numerous Fediverse services. Mastodon is probably currently the most popular of these.

If you prefer another application, you can also register there. However, the process can be slightly different. However, if you create an account via another platform, you are also automatically part of the decentralized network. These other services include, among others, Pleroma, PeeTube or Owncast.
