Since the breakthrough of ChatGPT, artificial intelligence has been on everyone's lips. In addition to abbreviations such as KI or AI, the term Artificial General Intelligence is also appearing more and more frequently. But what is that actually?
With the development of ChatGPT, the topic of artificial intelligence has made an enormous leap. But some researchers working on the topic of AI dream of more. Because they don't want to be satisfied with artificial intelligence, as AI is called in English.
They dream of a so-called Artificial General Intelligence, i.e. a general or all-encompassing artificial intelligence, as it is often translated in German. But what does this mean and what is Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI for short?
Was ist Artificial General Intelligence?
There are numerous definitions circulating for AGI. In addition to general or all-encompassing AI, it is also sometimes referred to as strong AI, full artificial intelligence or human-level AI.
The term has been circulating in professional circles since the late 1990s. However, there is no final and generally accepted definition. This can vary more or less depending on the specialist area.
Nevertheless, all researchers who deal with the topic can probably agree on various key points. Artificial General Intelligence represents an AI system that is highly autonomous.
Cognitively and intellectually it should have at least the same, if not better, abilities as humans. AGI is not just limited to learning and reproducing facts.
Because AGI – so the wishful thinking – should have its own natural human sense. Such a system could carry out any task that a human would also be cognitively capable of solving.
Why do we need AGI?
In contrast to so-called weak AI, artificial general intelligence could be used universally. Because this would not be limited to being used in just one area of responsibility.
Since it would have the same abilities as humans, it could be used, for example, for fully autonomous driving, in medical diagnostics or even in education.
However, AGI must be distinguished from the term artificial superintelligence. Because this represents a further development of general artificial intelligence.
Artificial superintelligence can still be viewed as purely hypothetical. It is also difficult to estimate the development so far. However, if it were real, it would surpass humans in intelligence and ability in all possible areas.
